Ten providers in the overview
The Swiss market for accounting software has become hard to survey. Around a dozen providers target SMEs and fiduciary firms, and almost all advertise with the same buzzwords: simple, Swiss, all inclusive. The real differences lie elsewhere. They lie in the price model, in whether payroll is included in the base price or billed per employee, in the server location, and in how well an external fiduciary can work along.
The following table summarises the entry price, the treatment of payroll, the server location and the trial period of the ten providers we meet most often in practice. What is compared is each provider's cheapest paid package - not the full build, which with modular solutions can cost a multiple.
Transparency note: Accounty is our own product. We list it in this table with the same information as the other providers and further below also name the points where Accounty stands worse than the competition.
| Provider | Model | Paid entry tier | Payroll | Server location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accounty | Cloud | CHF 24.15 (annual plan) | included, no employee limit | Germany (EU) |
| Abacus (AbaWeb) | Cloud, via fiduciary | from CHF 22.– general ledger | from CHF 10.–/month extra | Switzerland |
| AbaNinja / Swiss21 | Cloud | CHF 21.– (Basic), Starter free | included, statements quota-limited | Switzerland |
| Banana Accounting | Desktop (+ web app) | CHF 89.–/year (Professional) | not available | local, on the user's machine |

Four questions that tip the scales
Answer these four points for your own business and you have usually already narrowed the choice to two or three providers.
- 1
Flat price or modular?
Modular solutions look cheap at entry because the advertised price only covers the general ledger. Add payroll, order processing and a second user, and the amount quickly doubles. So do not calculate the entry price but the sum of the modules you will actually need in the first year.
- 2
Do you need payroll?
This is the priciest single item in the comparison. At bexio, KLARA and Abacus, payroll is billed separately or per employee; at AbaNinja, Infoniqa ONE Start and Accounty it is included in the base price - at Infoniqa, however, capped at five employees. Banana offers no payroll at all.
- 3
How important is the server location?
The Business Records Ordinance does not prescribe a location but integrity, traceability and availability over ten years. A Swiss server location is thus a preference, not a legal duty. If it is nevertheless set internally for you, Accounty and the EU instances of other providers drop out of the selection.
- 4
Is a fiduciary involved?
Ask them before deciding. Many fiduciary offices are well practised with one or two systems, and a closing in familiar software is regularly cheaper than in software the office first has to learn. At bexio a fiduciary access costs no extra user licence; Abacus AbaWeb is usually obtained via the fiduciary anyway.
Which solution fits which company size
Sole proprietorship without employees
What counts here above all is that the software does not create more effort than it saves. Capture documents, write QR invoices, reconcile bank movements and deliver a clean closing once a year - usually nothing more is needed. Free or entry tariffs like Swiss21 or Run my Accounts Startup cover that, as do the base packages of MILKEE or Accounty. Those not liable for VAT can even work with a pure desktop solution like Banana, but then have to organise backup and retention themselves.
SME with 2 to 10 employees
From the first salary certificate the calculation changes. Now what decides is whether payroll is included in the price and whether social insurance statements and salary certificates can be produced without extra software. At the same time, multiple users, payables approvals and usually the VAT return come on top. At this size the price difference between a flat-price offering and a modularly expanded package is clearest - over the year it can amount to several hundred francs.
From about 15 employees or with special requirements
If you need production, warehouse management, project time tracking or several clients with consolidated reports, you are better off with the full-grown ERP systems. Abacus and Infoniqa ONE 50 cover this depth but cost a multiple and need an implementation. The same applies if a Swissdec-certified wage declaration is strictly required: then there is no way around the established providers.
What a switch actually costs
The subscription fee is rarely the expensive part. What gets expensive is the time the move ties up - and that can be reduced markedly with the right timing.
Choose the moment
Switching at the start of a new financial year is by far the cheapest. Then only the opening balance is taken over; the prior year stays entirely in the old system and does not have to be re-entered.
Import master data
Chart of accounts, receivables, payables and employee data can be imported at all cloud providers via CSV or Excel. Preparing this file cleanly takes one to three hours and spares later rework on every single entry.
Post the opening balance
The balances from the last closing balance sheet are recorded as an opening entry. Afterwards check that the balance sheet total and the open items balance match the old system - hunting deviations later is much more laborious.
Keep the old system readable
The ten-year retention period still applies. Before cancelling, export journal, balance sheet, income statement and the VAT returns as PDF and back up the documents - a cancelled cloud access is at some point no longer reachable.
For a business with few employees, reckon with half to a full working day for the whole move. If the bookkeeping is run by a fiduciary, they usually handle the data takeover against effort billed - ask for an estimate in advance.
Detailed comparisons
Direct head-to-heads with Accounty:
Accounty vs. Bexio →Accounty vs. Infoniqa →Accounty vs. Sage →Online accounting: requirements →Where Accounty is not the right choice
A comparison in which your own product wins in every row is no comparison. Three points speak against Accounty, and depending on the business they are decisive:
- No Swissdec certification of the wage declaration. If your compensation office or insurer requires a certified Lohnstandard-CH transmission, that is an exclusion criterion. Abacus, Infoniqa and bexio are further along here.
- Server location Germany instead of Switzerland. Legally this is unproblematic for bookkeeping, but many businesses have an internal requirement or simply a preference for a Swiss location. Accounty does not fulfil that requirement.
- The youngest provider in the field. Abacus has existed since the 1980s, bexio since 2013. Accounty is markedly younger, accordingly has fewer references and a smaller ecosystem of integrations and partners.
What by contrast often speaks against the established providers: modular price lists in which payroll is billed per employee, and a feature scope that is simply oversized for a business with five employees.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often during software selection.
Which accounting software is right for my SME?
That depends on budget, required modules and whether a fiduciary works with you. If you need payroll and VAT in the same plan, look for providers with payroll included - with bexio, KLARA and Abacus payroll costs extra, while AbaNinja, Infoniqa ONE Start and Accounty include it in the base price.
What does accounting software cost in Switzerland?
Entry level in 2026 is typically between CHF 21 and CHF 55 per month. AbaNinja starts at 21.-, MILKEE at 24.90, Accounty at 24.15 on the annual plan, Run my Accounts at 25.-, bexio at 35.-, Infoniqa ONE Start at 42.- and KLARA at 55.-. With add-on modules and multiple users these amounts rise noticeably.
Does an accounting program's server have to be in Switzerland?
No. The Business Records Ordinance does not prescribe a server location, but integrity, traceability and availability during the ten-year retention period. A Swiss location may be desired for other reasons - but it is not legally required for proper bookkeeping.
Does switching mid-year make sense?
It is possible, rarely pleasant. The least effort arises at the start of a new financial year: then only the opening balance is taken over and the prior-year figures stay in the old system. With a mid-year switch, the months already booked must either be re-entered or brought in as balances.
Can my fiduciary work in the software with me?
With the cloud providers in this overview basically yes, but conditions differ. With bexio a fiduciary login costs no extra user licence. Accounty offers a dedicated fiduciary portal with client and to-do management. Abacus AbaWeb is usually obtained through the fiduciary in the first place.
What is the advantage of a cloud solution over installed software?
No installation and no server maintenance, automatic updates even for legal changes, access from multiple locations and predictable monthly costs instead of a licence purchase plus maintenance contract. In return you depend on the provider's availability and need a working internet connection.
Is Accounty also suitable for fiduciaries?
Yes. Fiduciaries manage multiple clients from one portal with roles, to-dos and consolidated reports. Accounty was built by a fiduciary team out of daily practice, so the workflows follow fiduciary routine.
Where is Accounty not the right choice?
If a Swissdec-certified salary declaration is strictly required, if your business needs deep ERP integration with production or warehousing, or if a Swiss server location is a hard internal requirement. In those cases established providers like Abacus or Infoniqa are the more realistic choice.
